Name:Hoban Washbourne
E-mail:paradoxotaur@yahoo.com
Bio:
I'm a leaf on the wind...

...watch how I soar.

Name: Hoban Washburne - call him Wash.
Fandom: Firefly
Desired Age: 33
Desired PB: Alan Tudyk
Desired Job: Cab Driver
Sexual Orientation: Straight.

Appearance: Next to the rest of Serenity's mighty crew - especially next to his wife - Wash doesn't cut the most intimidating figure. He's fit enough, as his job requires: sometimes running from the law requires actual running, and Wash can keep up with the rest of the crew in that aspect, albeit panting a little harder than the others. But his natural environment is behind the ship's wheel, not getting into skirmishes with ne'er-do-wells and Alliance soldiers. He's not exactly strong, but he's in shape. He even enjoys the occasional game of basketball, and he's fairly good at it.

It's not his frame that makes him intimidating, or his strawberry-blond hair, or even his puppy-like blue eyes. It probably has more to do with his trademark tropical shirts. Wash has a closet full of the brightly-colored monstrosities, and nothing in the 'verse will make him give them up.

Personality:
On the surface, Wash comes off as flippant, with his habit of playing with dinosaur toys and making glib comments in response to serious questions, but there's more to him than just that. His best, most prominent quality? Loyalty. Wash is a devoted and loving husband, and there's nothing he wouldn't do for Zoe. As a member of Serenity's crew, he trusts the crew implicitly. He also has a strong sense of justice and morality for a criminal. When something strikes him as wrong - for instance, throwing River and Simon off of the ship - he doesn't hesitate to speak up and fight for his cause, even if it's a lost one.

Wash is an unusual human being, quirky and somewhat eccentric. He's individualistic, and completely unashamed of it. He has high self esteem without coming off as cocky, and he doesn't let other people's opinions bother him. To anyone he knows, Wash is caring, and he's unashamed of that, too. He may not be the person on whose shoulder everyone comes to cry, but he'll stand up for anyone he cares about in an instant.

History:
Hoban Washburne was born on a planet so polluted that he never saw the stars. Perhaps it was this that inspired him to see the 'verse - all of it in its entirety, the beauty and the misery. His upbringing was uneventful. His family wasn't dirt poor, but they were far from wealthy. His parents were loving and kind, and when their son expressed interest to go to Flight School, they complied.

Wash was an excellent pilot from day one -- "born behind the wheel", it was said. He was second in his class only to a student who referred to himself as Mr. Universe, who achieved his top position through hacking the school's computers. When Wash found out, he was incensed, but agreed to keep it a secret so long as Mr. Universe stepped in if Wash called for his help.

Then the war came. Wash served as a pilot for the Independents, but saw little combat: not long into the war, his ship was shot down and he was taken as a prisoner of war. He spent the rest of the war entertaining fellow POWs with shadow puppets.

After the war, Wash drifted. He took on odd jobs that took him to odd places, including a planet where people juggled goslings, and built up an impressive resume. When it came time to settle down -- well, a little bit, anyway -- he did so by joining the crew of Serenity, a firefly transport vessel. For the most part, Wash got along well with his fellow crew members. Captain Mal Renolyds was impressed enough with his list of recommendations to forgive him the bizarre mustache and tropical-print shirts. Less forgiving was Zoe Alleyne, Mal's second-in-command, who distrusted Wash on sight. The two of them sparred verbally and repeatedly, and somehow in the middle of it they ended up falling in love. Against Mal's wishes, they married.

Life as Serenity's pilot was pretty standard fare - living off of protein, smuggling goods, running from the law, occasionally picking up a few passengers to help keep the ship in shape. It was when Serenity picked up a crew of passengers at Persephone that things turned complicated, and that complication came in the form of a sixteen-year-old girl named River Tam, a wunderkind who had been experimented on by the Alliance. While it was Mal's initial intention to drop the girl and her brother Simon, a doctor, off at the pioneer moon called Whitefall, the doctor was given the position of ship medic and the siblings stayed.

Things proceeded normally from that point - deals were transacted, crimes were committed, Simon the Medic found himself with plenty of wounds to deal with - until one day, when docked on a planet, River went berserk in a bar and killed everyone inside it, excluding Mal and her brother. Wash called in his favor with Mr. Universe, who discovered a subliminal message had been the source of River's outburst, and pointed out that she had whispered "Miranda" before attacking.

Another outburst showed the crew that "Miranda" is not a person, but a planet, unknown to all of the crew - and presumably the reason the Alliance had been so adamant about tracking River down. To get to Miranda, Serenity would have to pass through Reaver territory. "Reaver" refers to men who were no longer men, who skinned humans and wore their skins. To get past the Reavers, Mal ordered that Serenity be disguised as a Reaver ship. The plan was successful, and they slipped through unnoticed.

On Miranda, the crew discovered the origin of the Reavers, and why the Alliance had been so intent on hiding it. By releasing an anti-anxiety medication into the air, they had turned 90% of the population catatonic. The other 10% had the opposite reaction, turning them angry and violent: turning them into Reavers.

Mal planned to share this information with the rest of the universe by using Mr. Universe's media savvy. Before he could, an operative of the Alliance predicted that Mal might do this and killed Mr. Universe. The crew's goal becomes to reach Mr. Universe's complex, where an Alliance fleet was waiting. On the way to the complex, Wash fired on a Reaver ship, causing the Reaver fleet to chase after them. When they reached the complex, the Reavers and the Alliance battled each other, each trying to destroy Serenity. Wash's expert piloting brought the ship to the ground as he muttered to himself, "I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar."

The ship landed, and the crew heaved a sigh of relief. "I'm a leaf on the wind," Wash told them, "watch how I --"

And he was impaled by a Reaver harpoon. He died instantly.

In-game History
Hoban Washburne was born to two parents who were either great fans of the architect of the White House, a fan of such books as The Pilgermann and The Mouse and His Child, or just plain cruel. From his birth, "Hoban" was ignored in favor of the nickname Wash, which wasn't much better in the eyes of schoolchildren, but struck his relatives as a better alternative. Wash, despite his unfortunate name, was a well-liked, rarely-teased adolescent. His oddness and fondness for tropical-patterned shirts prevented him from being popular, but he got along well enough and even played for Harmony High's basketball team.

It wasn't laziness that prevented Wash from attending university, or lack of funds. It was simply lack of interest. Wash got his first cab-driving job shortly after leaving highschool and decided he just didn't want to do anything else. He liked being behind the wheel of an automobile, and he liked that he could do such a thing for a living. It earns him enough to get by.
